Leaf humus is the end product that results from decomposing organic matter. The leafy material is broken down by microorganisms into humus. It’s PH level is almost neutral ranging from 6.9 – 7 .2, which is perfect for most plants. (Excluding acid loving plants)
Leaf humus also acts as a soil conditioner- Clay rich soils benefit from leaf humus as it improves soil aeration and drainage and promotes deeper root growth. For sandy soils, water retention is improved and it increases the soil’s ability to hold nutrients in plant roots, decreasing the number of fertilizer applications. There can never be too much leaf humus and it can be applied during the spring, summer or fall.
